Manchester United: Could Christian Eriksen be Erik ten Hag's 'most important' signing?

As jubilant Leeds fans lingered after their team had left the field still overjoyed at a successful last-day relegation fight, it was impossible not to be drawn to the sight of Christian Eriksen. The Dane danced on the Brentford Community Stadium pitch with his three-year-old son Alfred, waved to supporters as he walked along the touchline with his partner Sabrina and their young daughter, handed his shirt to a fan and clambered over seats to pose for selfies. It was the drawing to a close of one of football's greatest good-news stories - and now the 30-year-old is beginning the next chapter after signing a three-year deal with Manchester United. Less than 12 months previously, Eriksen had collapsed during Denmark's Euro 2020 game against Finland following cardiac arrest. Slowly, he pieced his life back together. He had to leave Inter Milan after he had an implantable cardioverter defibrillator fitted, but he was free to play in England, and Brentford offered him a short-term

World Athletics Championships: Laura Muir progresses as US great Allyson Felix bows out

American seven-time Olympic champion Allyson Felix bowed out from her stellar career with one final World Championship medal, winning bronze in the 4x400m mixed relay in Oregon. The Dominican Republic denied Felix a golden farewell with the Netherlands pipping the United States to silver. Felix, 36, retires with 19 world medals, 13 of which are gold. Elsewhere on day one in Oregon, Great Britain's Laura Muir and Katie Snowden progressed to the 1500m semi-finals. Muir, who won Olympic silver in Tokyo last year, finished second in her heat in four minutes 7.53 seconds, while Snowden was 10th in her heat in four minutes 6.92 seconds. "It's always a bit nerve-wracking the rounds, you want to think about the final but you've got to get there first," Muir told BBC Sport. "It's hard at this level, the strength in depth is really good. "I was aware there were quite a few of us round there at the end, so I just wanted to stay out of trouble and save as much

Tiger Woods wiped away tears amid emotional scenes as he was cheered the full length of the 18th hole on Friday on what he says "feels like my last time" playing the Old Course in an Open Championship. No matter that the former world number one was about to miss the halfway cut at the landmark 150th staging of the world's oldest major, the standing ovation was recognition of his standing in the game. Woods has won two of his three Claret Jugs at the revered St Andrews venue and skipped last month's US Open to ensure he would be fit to play his favourite course this week. The 46-year-old did not say it would be his final Open Championship, but added: "I came to understand what Jack [Nicklaus] and Arnold [Palmer] felt in the past and I felt that way. They understand what golf is all about and what it takes to be an Open champion. "I have been lucky enough to win here twice - it felt emotional because I don't know whether I will be able to play when it co

American sprinter Fred Kerley made a "statement" in clocking 9.79 seconds in his 100m heat at the World Championships, says Michael Johnson. The Olympic silver medallist sent out an extraordinary warning of his form as he seeks a first world medal over the shorter sprint distance. It was the fastest heat time ever recorded in World Championship history. "There's definitely more in the tank, that was very easy," said four-time Olympic champion Johnson on BBC TV. "I was watching how [Kerley] ran that race and he just looked so easy, confident, in control of the race from start to finish and runs 9.79, that's an incredible time for him. "This track is quick, there's no doubt about that, but an amazing performance." Report Kerley's blistering time came on the same track in Eugene, Oregon, that he set a personal best and world lead of 9.76 secs in winning the US trials in June. The 27-year-old is a three-time world medallist across the 40
